Preparing for Your Laser Procedure

Have you decided to have a laser procedure to correct your vision? It is something that millions of people have done, and those who have had it love not having to deal with contacts or eye glasses anymore (and they also love how clearly they can see). You are no doubt excited (and maybe a bit nervous), but there are some things you can do before and after the procedure to ensure the best experience possible.

Before the procedure

Your doctor will, of course, have specific instructions for you to follow leading up to your procedure. But in general, here’s a couple of things to keep in mind:

• One (or even 2) days before the procedure, you should stop using makeup and other products on your face. You want to make sure your skin is as clean as possible. Wash your face thoroughly the night before and also on the day of the procedure to remove dirt, oil, and makeup, and don’t use any lotions or skincare products on your face.

• If you wear soft contact lenses, you should stop wearing them for a week before the procedure, so that your corneas have a chance to return to their natural shape.

During the procedure

You’ll want to wear comfy clothes that will keep you warm (but not too warm). You should choose a shirt that buttons up so you don’t have to worry about pulling a sweater up over your head.

After the procedure

You will need to have a friend drive you home after the procedure. You might also want to ask your friend to stay with you for a day or 2, because your vision will be blurry and you may have difficulty walking around. You will want to give your eyes a chance to rest. You won’t be able to watch TV or play games on your iPad, so you might want to have other types of entertainment prepared, such as your favorite podcast or an audiobook.
