Get Ready for More Sun, Chesapeake!

Optical Shop Chesapeake, VA Let the sun shine! We are gearing up for trips to Lake Drummond, Northwest River Park, and beyond. But before you do the same, make sure you have everything you need to keep your eyes safe and healthy in all the sun you’re going to be playing in. Not sure how to protect your eyes from UV radiation? Keep reading to learn how!

Many of us know to protect our skin when we’re out in the sun for extended periods of time. We slather on sunscreen while we’re out at the lake and make sure to put aloe vera on skin that we may have missed. Just like sunburn on skin, our eyes can react negatively to too much sun. Avoid getting too much sun and UV radiation by knowing the risk of what you’re doing.

Where is UV Radiation?

Honestly, UV rays are some of the hardest things to avoid. They still creep through the clouds on an overcast day, and they are strongest during the best times to be outside (between the hours of 10 AM and 4 PM). You can’t avoid them forever, nor should you have to!

UV Radiation is stronger near large bodies of water (they reflect light so you get more than just what’s shining down from above). Keep that in mind when you head out to the lake! Packing sunscreen is generally pretty easy. But, just like remembering to apply sunscreen regularly, it can also be difficult to remember to wear your eye protection consistently on sunny days.

Sunglasses are a must, but make sure to buy quality sunglasses that protect you from all UV Radiation. Many come with a sticker that says “100% UV Protection,” but if you’re not sure about a pair it might be worth buying another pair until you can have them looked at more closely. Sunglasses are easier to remember, but wide-brimmed hats along with them will give you the best chance at protection from harmful UV rays.
