Entropion is an eye condition in which the eyelid turns inward. It typically affects the lower eyelid, causing corneal irritation, abrasion, scarring, or thinning. It is caused by a loss of vertical lid support.


Patients with entropion tend to complain of the following:

  • A sensation of a foreign body
  • Redness
  • Tearing and discharge
  • Complications of Entropion
  • Several serious complications, including the following, can result from entropion:
  • Corneal irritation
  • Corneal scarring
  • Corneal thinning
  • Corneal abrasion

Causes of Entropion

  • Horizontal or vertical lid laxity
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Trauma
  • Radiation of the eyelid

Entropion Repair

Correction of an entropion is accomplished by a brief surgical procedure in which the
eyelids are repositioned. The repair procedure may include the following:

  • Removal of a small section of the eyelid to rotate the margin
  • A tightening of the lid laxity
  • Placement of sutures to rotate the eyelid
